A base for mucous membrane ointment comprises a colloidal solution of a solventswellable substance in a solvent which is a polyhydric alcohol, an amino-alcohol, an acylated amino-alcohol or a hydroxyalkyl ether and a finely ground material which is swellable in water but not in the solvent of the ointment base. Specified solvent-swellable materials are cellulose ethers e.g. hydroxy-ethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose; specified water-swellable materials are tragacanth, high molecular weight carboxymethyl cellulose and galactomannanes. Examples of solvents are glycerin, propanediol, acetyl aminoethanol, polyalkylene oxides and, N-(-#-hydroxyethyl) acetamide.
