Abstract
1,050,893. Centrifugal pumps. HENRY SYKES Ltd. March 19, 1965 [March 20, 1964], No. 11939/64. Heading F1C. The casing 11, Fig. 1, of a double-entry centrifugal pump is housed within a priming chamber 10, air collecting at the top of the chamber being drawn off through a pipe 30 by a continuously-running priming pump under the control of a float-operated valve 31, Fig. 3 (not shown). A further valve operated by the same float opens when the water in the chamber rises above a predetermined level and vents the chamber to atmosphere. Air leaking inwardly through a shaft seal 18 enters an auxiliary chamber 25 and, after separating from the water, is drawn off by the priming pump. Castellations 27 prevent the seal 18 (which has a flexible mounting 19) from being drawn into contact with wall 24 and also prevent the formation of a vortex around the adjacent part of the shaft 14. The pump volute 12 is integral with the main walls of the chamber 10.
