Abstract

1,050,892. Lightweight concrete. S. F. FRONDA and F. D. FRONDA. June 8, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 9691/64. Heading C1H. A dry concrete mix comprises a hydraulic cement and irregular fragments of expanded polystyrene. Sharp sand of particle size <SP>1</SP>/ 32 - <SP>1</SP>/ 8 inch may be included in the mix. Generally mixes contain 60-90% by volume polystyrene and 40-10% by volume cement, particularly Portland cement; that is, for polystyrene of density 1 lb./cu. foot, 1-10% by weight expanded polystyrene in the mix. Sand if present may be up to 400% by volume of the cement, generally 20-150%. The fragmented polystyrene may be obtained by mincing or shredding bulk expanded polystyrene, particularly scrap polystyrene, and may be soaked in water and drained before use. Lightweight concrete of density 20-70 lb./cu. foot is produced in situ or precast by moulding the dry mix with 0À5- 20% by weight water based on the cement weight. The cured blocks may be finished with a plaster coat, e.g. of Crete stone and water.
