Abstract

1,050,879. Turbine and compressor blade assemblies. WORTHINGTON CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1965 [Jan. 28, 1965], No.45225/65. Heading F1T. The invention relates to a fluid turning vane unit for use in the casing of a machine such as a turbine or compressor and which comprises a pair of side plates spaced apart to define a fluid flow passage therebetween, a plurality of fluid turning vanes being secured to and extending between the side plates. Means are provided on the side plates for positioning the unit in a casing, also for securing the unit to the casing. The invention is described with reference to an assembly of fluid turning units disposed in the exhaust outlet duct 28 of a turbine 30, a plurality of radially-extending ribs 34 extending between the walls of the duct 28 to define a plurality of passages therebetween, a fluid turning vane unit 10 being disposed in each of the passages, see Fig. 8. Each turning vane unit 10 comprises a pair of spaced side plates 12, 14 between which extend a plurality of fluid turning vanes 16, the vanes being secured to the side plates by fillet welds. Each of the side plates has a number of resilient tabs 20 pushed out therefrom which tabs serve to position the vane unit between the ribs 34 upon assembly. Each side plate is also formed with spaced flanges 22 or 24, the flanges upon assembly abutting against the radially outer ends of the ribs 34 and being secured thereto by bolts 38. The flanges 22 and 24 are so disposed that any unit 10 may be removed from the duct 28 without affecting an adjacent unit.
