Reaction products of a triglyceride ester of an unsaturated fatty acid (at least 12 C) or a derivative thereof, and an acyclic, olefinic acid or anhydride are hydroxylated to form a surface coating composition. Tung, oiticica, linseed, soya, cotton seed, dehydrated castor, perilla, tall and unsaturated fish oils and esters or partial esters of the acids with methyl, polyglycol or pentaerythritol esters are used and the acids are carboxylic with less than 10 carbon atoms, such as maleic, fumaric, itaconic, alkyl substituted maleic, and acrylic acids and citraconic anhydride. The oil-acid reaction product is hydroxylated by hydrogen peroxide, above or with a catalyst, or with a per-acid such as peracetic or performic and sulphuric acid. The oil may be modified by dienes and preferably 10-30% by weight of the carboxylic acid residue containing compound, is used in the reaction. Examples describe the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with a linseed oil-maleic anhydride product and its use in aqueous solution with a melamine/formaldehyde resin as a surface coating.
