Abstract
1050420 Programmed control of bending UNIVERSITY COURT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW 11 Oct 1965 [10 July 1964] 28480/64 Headings B3E E1G and EK In a programme control system for bending a bar to a desired shape by first bending a length of the bar at one end by a bending and gauging operation consisting of applying a transverse bending force to the bar, releasing the bending force and allowing the bar to spring back, gauging the curvature of the bar and applying a correcting force to bring the curvature within a predetermined deviation from the curvature required to provide the desired shape. The remainder of the bar is then bent to the desired shape by further bending and gauging operations consisting of feeding the bar endwise a predetermined distance, applying a transverse bending force to the unbent portion of the bar, releasing the bending force and allowing the bar to spring back, meaning the deviation of the force end of the bar from its calculated position and applying a correcting transverse bending force to bring the actual position of the free end of the bar to within a predetermined distance of the calculated position.
