In a data transmission system in which a received signal is checked for parity and is also returned to the transmitter for comparison with the transmitted signal, the parity bit of the returned signal is reversed if the receiver has detected an error. This ensures that in the event of inversion of a bit in the received signal, resulting in parity error, repetition of the original signal will occur even if there is fortuitous inversion on the return channel of the inverted bit.
