Abstract
1,050,200. Crystallization of polyethylene fumarate polyesters. CHEMISCHE WERKE WITTEN. Oct. 11, 1965 [Nov. 12. 1964], No. 43073/65. Heading C3R. In the production of friable polyesters containing fumaric acid and ethylene glycol residues, zinc or a zinc compound is added as a crystallization accelerator. Amounts of 0À01- 1 wt. per cent of the polyester of zinc or zinc compound are usually employed. Suitable zinc compounds are the oxide, carbonate, stearate, acetate, phosphate, pyrophosphate, iodide, chloride and borate. The fumaric acid residues may derive from fumaric or maleic acid or functional derivative thereof, e.g. maleic anhydride. The addition of an isomerization catalyst, e.g. I 2 or a cyclic secondary amine, is preferable when a maleic compound is used. In mixtures the fumaric component preferably exceeds 50% mol. Minor amounts of saturated symmetrical dicarboxylic acids and glycols may also be used, e.g. adipic and terephthalic acids, and tetramethylene, hexamethylene and decamethylene glycols. The zinc or compound thereof may be added before, during or after polymerization. In the examples fumaric acid/ ethylene glycol condensates of molecular weights about 850 or about 1150 are prepared in the presence of 0À02-1% by weight of zinc or zinc compounds named above.
