Abstract

1,050,167. Tubular film manufacture. BRITISH VISQUEEN Ltd. Oct. 1, 1965 [Oct. 20, 1964], No. 42734/64. Heading B5B. A tubular film flattening and cooling apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable nip rolls 1 illustrated in the drawing (not shown), said rolls being adapted to withdraw the plastics tubing continuously upwards from an extrusion die and to seal within the section of the tubing between the extrusion die and the nip a bubble of air or other gas introduced through a channel in the core of the extrusion die, cooled rectangular guide plates 2 converging towards the nip of the rolls and thus forming a V-shaped guide adapted to contact and guide the inflated tubular film as it collapses to a flattened form to pass through the nip, the ends of these guide plates being parallel to the nip, and a pair of metal cooling plates 3 adapted to contact and cool the side portions of the tubular film, including the parts destined to form the edge folds of the tubular film at the nip, these plates diverging towards the nip and being of triangular shape, adapted to fit between the guide plates 2. The plates 2 and 3 may be made from 1/8 inch thick copper sheet, and to the reverse side of each may be attached copper tubing (shown at 17 in the case of the plates 3) through which cooling water is downwardly passed.
