[Also in Division D1] Shaped structures, e.g. films, sheets, plates, ribbons, threads, thread netting or bristles, of linear aromatic polyesters of high molecular weight are united by spreading on the prepared surfaces to be united of the structures a mixture of at least two of the substances ortho-chlorophenol, tetrachlorethane, phenol, m-cresol, benzyl alcohol, resorcin, chlorobenzene and aniline, which are solvents for the polyester; contacting the treated surfaces under compression; heating these surfaces for a short time to a temperature within the range of 140‹ to 165‹ C., and cooling the joint so formed. The surfaces are prepared by cutting off obliquely the ends of the structures or positioning them to overlap each other. Preferably a ternary mixture of the solvents is used. In a modification, a solution of the polyester, of which the structures are made and containing at most 20% by weight of the polyester, in the solvent mixture of the present invention is spread on the surfaces. To reorientate the molecules of the polyester material in the joint, the joint is drawn after cooling by the application of a load of 50- 70% of the tensile strength of the shaped structures. A specified polyester is polyethylene terephthalate.
