Abstract

1,049,807. Hydro-mechanical change speed gear. KLEIN, SCHANZLIN & BECKER A.G. May 14, 1964, No. 20172/64. Heading F2D. A motor vehicle change speed gear providing reduced, direct and reverse ratios comprises a planet train 6 preceded by a hydrodynamic torque converter, the turbine T of which is fast with a sun gear 9 whilst the reactor L is connected by a one-way clutch 1 to an intermediate shaft 2 which is connected by a oneway clutch 4 to a planet carrier 6 and may be positively clutched thereto or braked by a clutch brake element 3 for reverse and low ratios respectively. Stepped planets 10 ... 12 mesh the sun 9, an output sun 14 and a reaction sun 15 which latter is held by a brake 16 for reverse. For low ratio the planet carrier 16 reacts through the one-way clutch 4 on the intermediate shaft 2 which is held by the clutch-brake element 3 whilst the turbine drives the output shaft. The carrier 6 may be bidirectionally held by a brake 5 to provide engine braking in low ratio. Direct drive is provided by engaging a clutch 7 to connect the planet carrier 6 to the sun 9 whereupon the planet gear rotates as a unit and the one-way clutch 4 overruns. For reverse ratio the intermediate shaft is clutched at 3 to the carrier 6 and the brake 16 is engaged. Since the planets 10, 12 are of equal size the turbine T is thus braked and the reactor L drives the carrier for reverse. A one-way clutch 17 between the torque-converter pump P and turbine T permits push starting. The clutch-brake element 3 at an intermediate position engages both the clutch and brake to hold the carrier 6 which together with engagement of the clutch 7 or brake 16 provides a parking brake.
