Abstract

The invention comprises the reaction product of a metal or metal compound (as defined) with a solubilized ester or mixture of esters of formula X.CO.OY wherein X is the residue of an aliphatic carboxylic acid (as defined) which is substituted by one or more halogen atoms and Y is a substituted or unsubstituted nitrophenyl, nitrocyclohexanyl or nitromethylcyclohexanyl radical, said ester or mixture of esters having been solubilized by reaction with either an alkylene oxide or by sulphonation. The term metal or metal compound is defined as Li, Na, K, Mg, Al,Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Se, Fe, Ni, Ag, Sr, Cd, Sn, Sb, Mo, Ba, Au, Hg, Pb, Bi, Pt, W, Ta, Te, the rare earth metals, U, Th and compounds thereof such as the oxides and carbonates. The term "aliphatic carboxylic acid" includes the C5-C13 fatty acids, naphthenic acids and resin acids. The products may be prepared by esterification of a substituted or unsubstituted hydroxy benzene, cyclohexanol or methylcyclohexanol with a carboxylic acid, nitration of the resultant ester, solubilizing the nitrated ester with an alkylene oxide (ethylene or propylen oxide) or by sulphonation, chlorinating the product and reacting it with a metal or metal compound. If desired, chlorination may precede the solubilizing step. Many examples are given of the metal containing compounds. The metals specified are Li, Na, K, Mg, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Se, Fe, Ni, Ag, Sr, Cd, Sn, Sb, Mo, Ba, Au, Hg, Pb, Bi, Pt, W, Ta, Te, the rare earth metals, U and Th. The active compounds may be compounded with a suitable carrier as a dry or wet mix. The wet mix may be a solution, suspension, emulsion or paste, and the dry mix in powder or granular form or as slabs or pellets. Powder carriers specified include talcum, kieselguhr, calcium carbonate, sand, boric acid, tricalcium phosphate, kaolins and bentonitus. Solutions may be prepared in benzene, toluene, xylene and paraffin hydrocarbons. Soaps, solubilizers, dyes, deodorisers and perfumes may also be included. The product may also be incorporated into the concrete for swimming baths in order to avoid the spread of athlete's foot and also into a solid composition for chemical and water closets.
