Abstract

104,927. Everett, E. P., and Pfister, J. March 25, 1916. Casks made from staves; materials, special; machines and apparatus for making staves. The staves of barrels, pails, or like coopered vessels are made from layers of " bogus," i.e., a material made from old newspapers, the layers being moistened with an adhesive and pressed into the desired form. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the blank 1, consisting of a number of sheets of bogus, with liquid adhesive between the layers, is placed between curved dies 2, 3 pressed together by hand-screws 9. The crozes are formed by projections 10 on the upper die, corresponding recesses 25 being formed in the lower die if desired. The sides and ends of the dies are suitably inclined so that the projecting ends of the blank may be cut off at the required angles. Clamps 12 are used to hold the parts firmly in position so that the dies and blank may be placed in a drying-chamber, where the temperature is kept at about 150‹ F. for an hour or more. The sides are preferably trimmed by the use of rotary saws 16, Figs. 9, end clamps 21 on the dies sliding in a slot 22 in the table 23. In the machine shown in Figs. 11 and 12, bogus taken from rolls 39 is supplied with adhesive by rollers 42 and passes under pressure of rollers 43 over a table 41 provided with inclined slots 45, through which are passed knives to cut the sides of the staves to the required shape. The partly cut blank is then passed on to the dies 46<a>, 46<b>, the ends of the stave being cut by any suitable means. The beads may be of wood, or may be laminated in the same way as the staves, and are shaped by spherical dies provided with annular cutters for trimming the edges of the blanks. The hoops may be of annular waste pieces produced during the formation of the heads. To facilitate assembly and transport, the staves 49, Fig. 14, may be connected permanently or detachably by an adhesive tape 50 or the like attached to the convex sides of the staves.
