Description

H. S. SMITH.
MANUFACTURE OF HOOPS. I No.183,8Z0. Iatented 0ct.31.1876.
WITNESSES: ,NVENTD W I WMWWK @VWMAW I Wig/7W? HEMAN S. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
' NEW YORK BARREL COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,820, dated October 31,1876; application filed January 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HEMAN S. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manufacture ofHoops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of hoops; and it consists making the hoop direct from the surface of the log, by first shaving the log off into one continuous sheet of lumber, and then passing this lumber through a suitable machine, which will divide it into strips of suitable Width, bevel one edge, and taper the ends, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention. I take a log of suitable size and length, and place it between two revolving mandrels or centers, and then shave from the surface of this log acontinuous sheet of lumber, by means of any known cutter or mechanism. This sheet of lumber is then divided up into pieces of suitable length and width,
and the pieces then passed through a machine or machines, which will divide them into strips of the width of the hoops, bevel one edge of each strip, and chamfer its end or ends.
If preferred, the shape of the hoops may be first cut into the surface of the logs by suitable mechanism, then shaved 05 by the cutter, and then passed through a finishing-machine that will bevel their edges and taper their ends.
By the processes above described the hoops can be manufactured with great rapidity, and at a great saving of material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The herein-described hoop made from the surface of the log by shaving it into one continuous sheet of lumber, and then cutting this lumber into strips for hoops, and dressing,
beveling, and chamfering the same by suitable machinery, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of January, 1876.
