Abstract

1,049,226. Marking cables. WHARTON ENGINEERS (ELSTREE) Ltd. July 22, 1965 [Aug. 4, 1964], No. 30431/64. Heading B6C. An apparatus for marking identification lines on a cable 60 comprises marking discs 20 arranged circumferentially of the cable so as to support one another, each disc being part of a unit 35 including an ink-chamber 42 and a wick 43 for feeding the ink from the chamber to the corresponding disc 20. As shown, three units 35 equi-angularly spaced around the cable are provided. Each unit 35 is pivoted at 34 to a member 30 having an axial passage therethrough for the cable and fixed to the upper end of a tubular shaft 13 rotatably mounted in a pedestal 1. The distance apart of the discs 20 may be adjusted by screws 50, each of which passes through a lower extension 40 of a unit 35 into contact with the inclined surface of a collar 51 urged upwardly by a spring 52. By depressing the collar 51, the units 35 can be moved away from the central axis to allow the cable to be passed freely between the discs 20. The lower end of the shaft 13 is connected by a belt 11 and pulleys 10, 12 to a shaft 9. Another belt-and-pulley arrangement 7, 8 connects the shaft 9 to a hollow shaft 5 situated vertically below the shaft 13 and carrying a driving pulley 2. The cable 60 is passed twice around the pulley 2, around guide rollers 17, 19 through the shafts 5, 13 to the discs 20, the cable itself forming the driving means. A separate driving means for the pulley 2 may, however, be provided. The discs 20 may be set at an angle so that as the marking head rotates, spiral stripes are made on the cable. For longitudinal stripes on the cable, the drive between the pulleys 10, 12 is disconnected, so that the marking head does not rotate, and discs 20 running longitudinally of the cable are employed. The pulley 2 may be coupled to means indicating the length of cable passing through the machine. . Inking.-The ink chamber 42 forms part of a member 41 carrying the wick 43, the member 41 being detachable from its unit 35 so that it can be replaced by another member 41 if it is desired to change the colour. .
