Abstract

1,048,452. Demagnetizing apparatus. HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN N.V. Feb. 2, 1965 [Feb. 12, 1964], No. 4537/65. Heading H1P. [Also in Division H4]. In an arrangement for eliminating residual magnetism in the ferro-magnetic yoke 2 (Fig. 1) of a cathode-ray tube deflection system, each deflection coil L 1 and its associated damping resistors R 1 is shunted by a two-terminal network 4, comprising an inductance L 2 and an adjustable resistor R 2 either series connected, as shown, or parallel connected, the time-constant of such network being greater than that of L 1 , R 1 so that at the end of a cycle of the sawtooth waves from generator 3, when the driving current i 0 (see also Fig. 2, not shown) has reached zero, the current i L1 in the deflection coils decays at a faster rate than the current i L2 in network 4 and thus when the former current reaches zero (T 2 , Fig. 2) the continued decay of the latter results in a current flow through L 1 in the opposite direction to the original decay current. This negative current eliminates the residual magnetism and the next beam deflection commencing at T 3 (Fig. 2) is independent of the previous one. The networks 4 may be located at a position remote from the tube and may be shunted across only part of the coils L 1 .
