Abstract

Automatic increasing mechanism in a flat knitting machine comprises an axially movable screw shaft 5, shiftable one pitch of the needles by a cam and having oppositely screw threaded halves, and parallel thereto, and also under the needle bed 4, a guide shaft 6 on which are keyed first and second members 23 carrying two needle raising and lowering elements 24, 25 engaging respectively the two halves of the screw shaft and means comprising cams for rotating the screw shaft and the guide shaft. A shaft 2 carrying groove cam C and disc cams A, B is journalled in the machine frame 1 and is controlled by cord or chain mechanism 3 to perform one rotation at predetermined intervals. Between collars 7 and 8 on shaft 5 is inserted a roller 9 mounted on a trunnion 10 eccentrically mounted on shaft 11. Shaft 11 carries at its free end an arm 13 with a connecting rod 14 having a cam follower roller 15 engaging the groove cam C which at the right hand end of the carriage traverse causes shaft 11 to rotate. At the same time shaft 6 is rotated being controlled by disc cam B through roller 21, connecting and raises a right hand needle. When the carriage reaches the mid point of its stroke shaft 5 is returned to its initial position by groove cam C. A pin wheel 16 on the end of a screw shaft 5 engages the upper end of a rod 17 having a follower roller 18 engaging cam A and, at the left hand end of the carriage stroke, rod 17 is lifted and pin wheel 16 together with screw shaft 5 are rotated so that members 23 and lowering elements 24, 25 are slid non-rotatably along guide shaft 6 by forked arms 22 engaging screw shaft 5 so as to be moved inwardly or outwardly one pitch of the needles. Guide shaft 6 is then rotated by cam B to turn needle raisers 24 to raise a left hand needle. A pawl 26 on chain mechanism 3 oscillates a lever 27 and through a connecting rod 28 and rod 30 with a forked lower end to release a driving wheel 32 and sprocket wheel 33 when carriage 34 reaches the left hand end of its traverse to start the rotation of shaft 2.
