Abstract

The invention comprises resins containing at least 100 units of formula <FORM:1048273/C3/1> wherein the oxygen atom of one unit is connected to the benzene nucleus of the adjoining unit, Q is hydrogen, an aliphatic hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical free of a tertiary a -carbon atom, Q1 is the same as Q or is a halogen, an arylhydrocarbon or haloarylhydrocarbon radical, a hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy radical free of an aliphatic tertiary a -carbon atom, and Q11 is the same as Q1 or is one of the groups nitro, amino, diazo, nitrile, carboxyl, quaternary ammonium, P(halogen)2, As(halogen)2, PO3H2, PO2H2, of these groups in the majority of the units in the molecule. The resins containing nitro groups may be obtained by nitrating a resin obtained by reacting oxygen with the corresponding phenol in the presence of a tertiary amine and a cuprous salt soluble in the amine and capable of existing in the cupric state. The nitro-containing resin may be reduced to the amino-compound, which may be diazotized; the diazo groups then may be replaced by the other groups. Alternatively, nitro-containing polymers may be obtained from nitro - substituted phenols, and amino-substituted polymers may be obtained by amination of polymers containing halogen atoms attached to the aromatic nucleus. In examples a polymer is nitrated, converted to the amino compound, diazotized, the diazo compound is converted to the nitrile and then to the carboxyl resin, and the amine compound is converted to a quaternary ammonium compound. The resins may be used as ion-exchange materials.
