Abstract
<PICT:1048237/C1/1> A flat contact tempering plate having a yielding surface is made up of a series of juxtaposed independent elements each element comprising a flat head 1 fixed to the top end of a spindle 2 which extends into, and slides resiliently within, a plate support 3, the spindle 2 also being used to transmit and remove heat from the flat head portion 1 to a cooling fluid, circulating within passages 4 in the support 3, during the tempering of a glass sheet. A spring or spring washer 5 interposed between the head 1 and the support 3 gives the element its resilience which can be regulated by a nut 6 at the lower end of the spindle 2. A duct 9 within the spindle 2 terminating in an orifice in the head 1 allows a gas to pass through and form a cushion at the plate surface below a glass sheet. By depressing predetermined numbers of the elements it is possible to differentially temper a glass sheet. The elements may be hexagonal in shape and the whole unit forming the full plate is covered with a woven fabric such as glass fibre. The head 1 and spindle 2 may be made of copper. A plate made up as above may be used in conjunction with the upper plate described in Specification 1,043,903 to contact temper a sheet of glass laid flat between two such plates.
