Abstract

Novel oxyalkylated adducts are obtained by reacting alkylene oxides, e.g. ethylene, propylene and/or butylene oxide with the adducts obtained by reacting a phosphorus acid, e.g. orthophosphoric acid, with halogenated glycidyl ethers or esters, e.g. halogenated alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl glycidyl ethers or esters. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, under pressure in an atmosphere of the gaseous alkylene oxide and preferably at a temperature of 120 DEG -170 DEG C. Under such conditions compounds consisting of 1 to 25 moles or more of the alkylene oxide per mole of the adduct may be produced. The compounds are useful as flame-retardant components for polyurethane foams (see Division C3).ALSO:A polymeric composition comprises a rigid or flexible polyurethane foam and a flame retarding additive comprising an oxyalkylated adduct of a halogenated glycidyl ether or ester, e.g. a halogenated alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl glycidyl ether or ester, and a phosphorus acid, e.g. orthophosphoric acid. The adduct may be obtained by reacting 1 mol of a glycidyl compound/phosphorus acid adduct with from 1 to 25 moles of an alkylene oxide. The additives which are added to the composition before foaming are stated to be bonded to the polyurethane by a reaction involving hydroxyl groups thus providing " built-in " flame retardant components. The composition may also contain other additives, e.g. antimonycontaining compounds.
