Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the formula <FORM:1047519/C2/1> (wherein X is fluorine or chlorine, R is C2- 6 alkanoyl or cycloalkanoyl, and R1 is C1- 7 alkanoyl or cycloalkanoyl, the total number of carbon atoms in R and R1 together not being greater than 9) and their preparation by acylation of a corresponding 17a ,21-diol, a 17a -hydroxy-21-acyloxy compound or a 17a -acyloxy-21-hydroxy compound.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions for use in the topical treatment of inflammation comprise steroids of the formula <FORM:1047519/A5-A6/1> (wherein X is fluorine or chlorine, R is C2-6 alkanoyl or cycloalkanoyl, and R1 is C1-7 alkanoyl or cycloalkanoyl, the total number of carbon atoms in R and R1 together not being greater than 9) and a topical vehicle. They may also contain bacteriostats, antimicrobial agents and antibiotics. Preparations mentioned are ointments, lotions, creans, powders, sprays, drops, suppositories, retention enemas, chewable or suitable tablets or pellets and aerosols, and they may contain thickening, gelling, emulsifying, stabilizing, dispersing, suspending, solubilizing and colouring agents, perfumes and preservatives, Bacteriostats mentioned are alkyl hydroxy benzoates, chlorocresol and benzalkonium chlorides.
