Abstract
1,047,433. Aromatic carboxylic acids. MOBIL OIL CORPORATION. May 1, 1963, No. 17164/63. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a method of purifying aromatic dicarboxylic acids which have been obtained by oxidizing a methyl-substituted aromatic compound with molecular oxygen, the oxidation having been effected in a solution of a fatty acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms, the solution containing also minor proportions of a methylenic ketone, water and a cobalt salt of a fatty acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms. The purification method consists in heating the oxidized reaction mixture to 225-260‹ C. for at least 10 minutes under at least autogenous pressure and then cooling the mixture to below 170‹ C. to effect crystallization of the carboxylic acid. The acid may then be further purified by solution and crystallization in known manner, a number of suitable solvents being specified. Examples are given of the purification of terephthalic acid obtained by oxidizing p-xylene with molecular oxygen at 130‹ C. and a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. inch, in a solution of acetic acid containing minor proportions of methylethyl ketone, water and cobalt acetate tetrahydrate. Other specified starting materials are m-xylene, methylnaphthalenes and methyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons containing chlorine, bromine or fluorine atoms or nitro, carboxy, alkoxy, aryloxy or tertiary alkyl groups. Specific reference is made to the oxidation of m-xylene or m-toluic acid to isophthalic acid, p-toluic acid to terephthalic acid, 1,4 - dimethyl - 2 - chlorobenzene to chloroterephthalic acid and 1,4-dimethyl-2-nitrobenzene to nitroterephthalic acid.
