Abstract
1,047,221. Permanent- and electro-magnets. NEWPORT INSTRUMENTS Ltd. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 13, 1961], No. 40523/61. Heading H1P. In a permanent- or electro-magnet having mutually opposed poles each pole tip comprises a part 10 integral with or rigidly secured to the main body of the associated pole, and a part 14 having a planar pole face 17 and secured closely adjacent the part 10 in a manner which permits it to have a controlled rocking movement relative to the part 10 over a limited arc about an axis lying at right angles to the pole axis, and the respective axes of rocking movement of the opposing pole tip parts are mutually at right angles whereby parallelism between the opposing pole faces 17 can be effected. The invention is applicable to magnets providing a homogeneous field such as for nuclear resonance absorption measuring devices, and the movement is effected by a plunger 28 which rocks the part 14 about two proud regions 18 on the part 10; the plunger is moved by wedging engagement with a block 25 axially slidable by a screwed plug 22, 24, and after adjustment the two discoidal parts 10, 14 are mutually fixed by split encircling clamping ring 19 having equispaced projections 30 engaging in V-section surfaces 13, 16. In the case of an electromagnet the energizing coils may be water cooled.
