A crankshaft bearing temperature alarm comprises a transistor transmitter and a battery built into the crankshaft, the arrangement being such that the battery is activated at a predetermined temperature to energize the transmitter. The battery comprises a container in which the electrolyte is separated from the electrodes by a valve actuated by expansion of a rod in thermal contact with the crank bearing. The transmitted signals are received by a receiver, built into the crankcase, which actuates the alarm device.
