Abstract

Resinous condensates are obtained by heating formaldehyde with a polyamide having terminal groups of the formula <FORM:1047184/C3/1> wherein R is Cl, Br, nitro, sulpho- or C1- 7 alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2 and OH is in the 4 position when n = 0. The polyamide may be derived from a polyamine and the appropriate 4,4-bis-(hydroxyaryl) pentanoic acid or such acid may be used to end-cap any polyamide or polyesteramide. Numerous polyamide-forming materials are listed, prominence being given to polyamides of C16- 36 fatty dimer acids and polyamides. The products may be modified by incorporation of an additional phenol and may be used to modify urea-formaldehyde or other phenol-formaldehyde resins.
