Abstract

104,707. Wade, H., (Reed & Co., C. E.). March 9, 1916. Shaping by cut. ting. - Relates to machines for removing the stubs from the toes and heels of unfinished lasts, of the kind wherein a tracer 86<a>, Fig. 5, runs around a pattern 88 and cutters 87 are constrained to move in similar paths around the lasts 89 while the pattern and lasts are fed past the tools. The cutters are mounted on rotary spindles carried, with the tracer, by a slide 57 movable on a slide 54, Fig. 2, and the work is fed past the tools by the descent of the work-holder. The pattern and lasts are secured between side clamps 237, 239, 241, 242, Fig. 5, carried by bars 210, 211 adjustable towards each other on the converging faces of the work-carrier 203 to suit the length of the lasts, and the side clamps are carried by bars 216, 217 relatively slidable in the bars 210, 211, so that the space be. tween them can be adjusted to the width of the lasts. The lasts are further held down by clamping-plates 254, 255. The carrier 203 is pivoted at 206 to a slide 161, Fig. 2, so that when the toes are finished it can, be reversed to bring the heels to the cutters without moving the lasts in the carrier; it is supported bv a rod 281 slidable in a tube 275 pivoted to the slide 161, and the rod 281 is provided with a rack engaging a locking- pinion controlled by a handle 280 for reversing and locking the work-carrier. The slide 161 and the work-carrier 203 are partly counterbalanced and are adapted to descend slowly under the action of gravity and a dash-pot 176 in known manner to feed the work past the cutters. The work carriage is set at the different heights necessary preparatory to operating upon the toes and heels respectively, by raising it until a catch-piece 362<a> formed at one end of the lever 361, Fig. 17, carried by the carriage engages with either of two adjustable stops 354, 355 on the machine frame. The lever is rocked on a pivot 360 to set the catchpiece to engage with the appropriate stop by an eccentric pin 365 on the axle 206 of the workholder. The clamps which press the lasts against the face of the work-holder may be formed in two sections 500, 501, Fig. 29, connected together by a pivot 502. Ball bearings 162, Fig. 21, are provided between the work carriage and the machine frame. The balls occupy holes in a plate 169, in which is mounted a pinion 172 in gear with racks 174, 175 secured respectively to the machine frame and the carriage.
