Abstract

Resins are prepared by condensing with heating a polyphosphonitrile halide and an aromatic compound having functional groups which react with the halogen atoms, and then washing the condensation product with water while it is kept in a softened or fused state, to remove hydrogen halides. The product also may be washed with an organic solvent which dissolves unreacted polyphosphonitrile halide but not the condensation product, either before or after washing with water, or the product may be washed with a mixture of solvent and water. In examples, condensation products are obtained by heating polyphosphonitrile chloride, bromide and fluoride with phenol, hydroquinone, paraphenylenediamine, paraaminophenol and resorcinol, and the products are washed by boiling with water, and washed with benzene and trichloroethylene, or washed with a hot mixture of ethyl alcohol and water. Other reactants mentioned include catechol, aminobenzoic acids, pyrogallol, oxyhydroquinone and polyphosphonitrile iodide. Other solvents mentioned are toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene and tetrachloroethane.
