Abstract

A novel reaction product resulting from extracting dried podophyllum rhizomes with a water miscible aliphatic alcohol, optionally treating with a tannin precipitating agent, optionally additionally extracting the material into an alcohol/chlorinated hydrocarbon mixture, and directly condensing with benzaldehyde the glucoside mixture contained in the said extract after removal of non-glucosidal components, preferably by prior extraction of these with a chlorinated hydrocarbon.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise an inert diluent and a novel reaction product resulting from extracting dried podophyllum rhizomes with a water miscible aliphatic alcohol and directly condensing with benzaldehyde the glucoside mixture contained in the said extract after removal of non-glucosidal components. The examples contain a mixture of podophyllotoxin-benzylidene-b -D-glucoside, 41-demethyl-podophyllotoxin-benzylidene-b -D-glucoside, an aglucone and resin fraction, unreacted glucosides and additional unidentified matter optionally with a - and b -peltatin-benzylidene-b -D-glucoside being present.
