Abstract
1,046,232. Making synthetic filaments. CHEMSTRAND Ltd. Jan. 20, 1964 [Feb. 6, 1963], No. 4850/63. Heading B5B. In making filaments by extruding a solution of a polymer in a volatile organic solvent into a coagulating zone, the filaments are continuously withdrawn from this zone and passed successively through a hot stretch bath, a first hot drying and evaporating zone through which a heated inert gas is passed and the filaments are then conducted through a second hot drying zone through which a hot inert gas is passed under free-to-shrink conditions to reduce the tendency of the filaments to shrink subsequently. The filaments are thereafter subjected to a texturizing operation. As illustrated in the drawing (not shown) a spinning solution of a polymer such as polyacrylonitrile dissolved in a solvent such as dimethyl-formamide is wet spun into a coagulating bath 1 and the partially coagulated filaments 2 are withdrawn from the bath 1 by a set of driven rolls A and passed through a hot stretch bath 3. The filaments are withdrawn from the stretch bath by a set of rolls B driven at a higher peripheral speed than are the set of rolls A. The filaments are thereafter passed through a bath 4 containing a textile finish and then through a fluidized bed dryer 5 containing small ceramic beads heated mainly by electric heaters in direct contact with them. An inert gas heated by passage through an electric heater 6 is introduced into the bottom of the dryer to fluidize and to impart additional heat to the beads and to carry off the solvent evaporated from the filaments during their passage through the dryer. The solvent-laden inert gas is withdrawn from the dryer 5 by an extractor fan 7 and conducted to a solvent recovery system 8. The filaments are then passed through a second fluidized bed dryer 9 similar to the dryer 5 and heated in the same manner, the roll 10, over which the filaments pass into the dryer 9, being driven at such a peripheral speed as to permit shrinkage of the filament at a controlled degree within the range of 20 to 35%. The filaments 2 are finally passed through crimping rolls 11.
