Abstract
Novel tetrahydro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 5 -(1-methyl-propenyl)-furan is produced in admixture with tetrahydro - 2,6,6 - trimethyl - 2-vinyl-pyran by cyclizing myrcenol or ocimenol or mixtures thereof in the presence of an acid catalyst, preferably aqueous or anhydrous hydrogen chloride present in a concentration of from 0.01% to 5% by weight, at a temperature of from 65 DEG C. to about 110 DEG C., optionally in the presence of an anti-oxidant and an inert atmosphere. The products are conveniently separated, if desired, by vacuum distillation, and are useful as nuance additives for composing synthetic oils.
