Abstract

1,046,077. Laminates and laminating. PACIFIC VEGETABLE OIL CORPORATION. March 3, 1964 [March 4, 1963]. No. 8890/64. Heading B5N. Laminates comprising upper and lower layers e.g. of sheet material such as plywood, cementasbestos, paper, aluminium foil, mineral material or paper/aluminium combined sheets, and core material of foamed plastics such as phenol-, urea- or melamine-aldehyde resins, polyvinyl chloride, or epoxy or polyurethane resins, are made by extruding the foam material between the outer layers, from a nozzle or nozzles occupying substantially the whole space between the layers, and moving the layers relative to the extrusion nozzle or nozzles. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the layers 34, 35 are enclosed in and secured, as by clamps or vacuum cups, to a rectangular mould box 37, 38, 41, and the nozzle 17 is moved backwards by the pressure of the extruded foam. The nozzle comprises a flared portion 14, a wire grid or perforated plate 17 and rubber sealing blocks 18, 19. For sealing corrugated or internally undulated layers during treatment a nozzle is used comprising upper and lower movable layers spaced apart by a spring and connected by gusseted side walls. Two or more nozzles may be used in parallel. In Fig. 9 (not shown) layers 60, 61 are fed continuously between endless belts 66, 68 closed at the sides by blocks 71, and the delivery pipes 20 of nozzles 17 carry pistons 47 in cylinders 45 to either end of which compressed air may be admitted, or air released via cocks 52, 53, to regulate the movement of the nozzles. One of the layers 60, 61, or both layers, may be replaced by panels.
