Abstract

A solid body such as a coil of rod is heat treated by immersion in a fluidized bed, the flow of fluidizing gas being interrupted to reduce the heat transfer rate to or from the body, and restarted before removing the body from the bed. As exemplified the process is applied to the cooling of carbon steel rod, cooling being interrupted at such a temperature that a fine pearlite structure is formed. The apparatus of Specification 1, 040, 760 modified to permit rapid variation of the gas supply, may be used.
