Abstract

Casting resins based on unsaturated polyesters by hardening with conventional cross-linking agents in the presence of organic per oxides are characterized in that the polyester contains 5 to 80% of a reaction product of maleic anhydride with esters of mono- and/or polyhydric alcohols with unsaturated carboxylic acids, the carbon chains of which are straight or branched and contain from 8 to 30 carbon atoms, and/or with naturally occurring mixtures of preponderantly unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides. The reaction product of maleic anhydride with the said carboxylic acid esters may be hydrogenated before incorporation into the esterification mixture. As well as synthetic carboxylic acid esters there may be used mixtures of fatty acid triglycerides from naturally occurring materials such as tung oil, castor oil, soya oil, oiticica oil and linseed oil, to form the reaction products with maleic anhydride. These reaction products can be carried out before the production of the polyesters or can be carried out at the same time as the production of the polyesters and in the same reaction vessel. In the examples the maleic anhydride reaction products are formed by reacting maleic anhydride with tung oil or oiticica oil and the polyesters are formed from maleic anhydride and 1,3-butylene glycol.
