Abstract

A process for the mass coloration of synthetic linear polyesters comprises using as colouring matter one or more dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:1045564/C3/1> wherein D represents a polycyclic dyestuff radical which contains at least three condensed ring systems and which is free from sulphonic acid groups; Y represents -NH- or -S-; n represents a positive integer not exceeding 3; m represents a positive integer not exceeding 4; and the benzene ring A may be further substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms. D may represent an anthraquinone dye-stuff radical. The dyestuff may be a dyestuff of the formula <FORM:1045564/C3/2> wherein T1, T2 and T3 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a group of the formula <FORM:1045564/C3/3> Two of the T1, T2 and T3 groups may represent hydrogen atoms and the third may be the o-carboxy anilino group. The dyestuff may be mixed with the polyester before the latter is melt spun or with a monomer or prepolymer of the polyester before polymerization and melt-spinning. The linear polyester may be of terephthalic acid and a C2- 10 polymethylene glycol or 1:4-dimethylol cyclohexane. It is preferred that in the formula of the dyestuff n represents 1 and that the -COOH group is attached to the benzene ring A in ortho position to the bridging atom or group represented by Y. The radical D preferably contains from three to eight condensed ring systems which can be carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings or a combination of both types. It is preferred that D represents a 11:91 - anthrapyridone, 11:91-anthrapyrimidine, isothiazoloanthrone, pyrazoloanthrone, 31:41-phthaloylacridone, phthaloylperinone, and, above all, an anthraquinone dyestuff radical. The dyestuff radical D is attached to the atom or group represented by Y through the carbon atom of an aryl ring, which is preferably a benzene ring present in D.
