Abstract

Alumina hydrate is prepared from pregnant sodium aluminate solution by first treating with a relatively coarse seed alumina hydrate, of which at least 75% will not pass through a 325 mesh (Tyler) screen, to precipitate a major proportion of the precipitatable alumina hydrate. Afterwards a relatively fine seed alumina hydrate, of which at least 60% passes through a 325 mesh screen, is added to complete the precipitation. The process may be carried out in two stages where the coarse-grained alumina obtained in the first stage is separated and the liquor passes to a second stage to precipitate the finer alumina hydrate. The second stage may be initiated when at least 85% of the alumina has precipitated. The fine grained alumina hydrate obtained in the second stage may be divided into two parts; the first part being used as seed in a subsequent stage and the remainder removed and treated with fresh sodium aluminate to coarsen the particles. The coarsened particles obtained may then be used as seed in the first stage precipitation. The molten liquor from the coarsening stage may be forwarded to the second precipitation stage for treatment with fine seed alumina hydrate. In an alternate embodiment, the fine seed alumina hydrate may be added to the depleted aluminate liquor of the first stage before separation of the coarse grained alumina hydrate.
