Abstract

Thermoplastic polycarbonates are made by reacting (1) 1.02 to 1.2 mols of a bischloroformate of a dihydric alcohol or a bischloroformate of formula Cl.CO.O-[-A.O.CO.O.B.O.CO.O-]-nA.O.CO.Cl where A and B are glycol residues and n is 1 to 12 with (h) 1 mol of a glycol; the reaction being effected at 0 DEG to 25 DEG C. in the presence of a tertiary amine and the bischloroformate being added to a solution of the glycol and the tertiary amine. Preferably the solvent used is one which dissolves the glycol, the bischloroformate and the resulting polycarbonate but does not dissolve the amine hydrochloride by-product. Specified glycols are ethyleneglycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, 1:2-, 1:3- or 1:4-butenediol, 1:6-hexanediol, cyclohexanediols, and 1:2-, 1:3-or 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanols. The reaction mixture may include molecular weight regulators, e.g. bromides, iodides, cyanides and thiocyanides of Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca or a tertiary amine. Examples describe the reaction of the bischloroformate of 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol with 1:4-cyclohexanedimethanol, ethylene glycol or 1:4-butanediol. Uses.-Films and filaments.
