Abstract

Compounds of general formula RnSiX4- n and/or <FORM:1045111/C3/1> where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, X = F, Cl or Br, m = 0, 1, 2 or 3 (avge. value 1 to 2.5), n = 0, 1, 2, 3 (avge. value 1.25 to 2.5), are hydrolysed by vigorously agitating the compound(s) with an aqueous solution at pH 7 to 11 before, during and after hydrolysis, in the absence of solvents for the siloxane products present. The product contains 90% of non-cyclic siloxane and the majority of molecules present have <6 Si atoms. The product may be aged (optionally with heating) in contact with an aqueous solution at a pH >7 to obtain a hydroxylated siloxane containing <30% total cyclic siloxanes and linear siloxanes containing <7 Si atoms per molecule. This aged product may be further condensed to a high polymeric siloxane. Examples of R are methyl, R1CH2CH2- or R21CHCH2- where R1 is a perfluoralkyl radical (especially 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl).
