Abstract

[Also in Division G1] The height of discrete or comminuted material 3, Fig. 2 (e.g. coal), on a moving conveyer belt 2 (also Fig. 1, not shown) is sensed by an arrangement comprising a signal beam transmitter 8 and a signal beam detector 9 carried by counterweighted arms 6 secured to a rotatable shaft 4. The latter is driven by a reversible motor 10 (or through a reversible electromagnetically actuated clutch, Fig. 3, not shown), which operates to move arms 6 downwardly for so long as detector 9 receiver the signal beam and then, upwardly for so long as the signal beam is interrupted by the material 3. The angular position of the arm is thus indicative of the height of the latter and this may be interpreted by means of a rotatable cam or, an electrical analogue of such angle may be produced by means of a potentiometer 13 and utilized to actuate an indicating or controlling device for e.g. a further conveyer feed adding other material to material 3. The signal beam transmitter preferably comprises an ultrasonic source although a light source may be employed if desired the detector in each case being appropriate to the nature of the beam.
