Abstract

A graft polymer is produced by copolymerizing in aqueous emulsion ethyl acrylate and vinylidene chloride in the presence of ammonium persulphate and sodium hydrosulphite and then adding further vinylidene chloride to effect grafting of this latter portion of vinylidene chloride on to the initially-formed copolymer.ALSO:Fabrics containing stretch but substantially non-elastic yarn are impregnated with a liquid elastomeric composition and treated to form a dry, tack-free deposit of elastomer, the deposition of the elastomer being confined to the individual yarns of the fabric so that the fabric has substantially the same permeability and physical appearance as prior to impregnation but has a high modulus. The stretch yarns may be produced by a torque process involving twisting the yarn to produce the desired degree of deformation or by a non torque process involving crimping of the yarn by passing it over a heated edge or through a stuffer box. The yarns may be plied yarns, spun staple yarns or multi-filament yarns prepared from continuous filaments. The treated fabrics may contain a stretch yarn in only the warp or weft. The fabrics may be produced by weaving or knitting, e.g. by a shuttle weave, leno weave, circular knit, tricot knit, rachel knit or kidde knit process from yarns comprising cotton, wool, linen, viscose rayon, nylon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol, polyurea, polyurethane or cellulose ester fibres. Suitable elastomers are those prepared from acrylates, natural rubber, styrene-butadiene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, butyl rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyesters, cis-polyisoprene, fluorocarbon rubbers, polyester-polyamide elastomers, cis-polybutadiene, chloroprene rubber, ethyl acrylate-vinylidene chloride having vinylidene chloride grafted thereto and urethane elastomers prepared from either polyethers or polyesters. The fabric may be treated with a solution, emulsion or dispersion of the elastomer in water or an organic solvent by immersion, spraying, roller coating or continuous dipping and cured by heating to 50 DEG -250 DEG C. Polyurethanes may be applied in organic solvents e.g. carbon tetrachloride, chloroform or other halogenated hydrocarbons, ethers or aromatic hydrocarbons together with a curing agent, e.g. water or a dithiol. After impregnation prior to curing the fabric may be moulded into a desired shape or form, e.g. a swimming suit, and cured on the mould.
