Abstract

1,044,771. Purifying hydrocarbons. GAS COUNCIL. March 24, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 13070/63. Heading C5E. Sulphur compounds are removed from hydrocarbon feedstocks by passing the hydrocarbon in admixture with a hydrogenating gas, either or both of which may contain olefins and/or carbon oxides, over a hydrodesulphurization catalyst to convert sulphur present into hydrogen sulphide; dividing the treated mixture into a recycle stream and a product stream; removing hydrogen sulphide either from the treated mixture before division into two streams, or from the product stream and optionally also from the recycle stream; using the recycle stream to dilute further untreated mixture before passing the untreated mixture over the hydrodesulphurization catalyst and recycling sufficient treated mixture to maintain the reaction temperature in the region of the hydrodesulphurization catalyst at not more than 450‹ C. Hydrocarbons used include light petroleum gases and light distillates containing appreciable amounts of olefin, e.g. 10% by volume. The untreated reaction mixture preferably contains sufficient hydrogen to hydrogenate all the olefins and/or carbon oxides in addition to the sulphur compounds, the volume ratio hydrocarbon : hydrogenating gas preferably being 3 : 1 to 10: 1. The catalyst, e.g. molybdenum supported on alumina promoted by cobalt or nickel, is preferably maintained at 300‹ to 400‹ C. and the process takes place at 5 to 50 atmospheres pressure.
