Abstract

A lubricant is obtained by polymerizing a C3 to C8 olefin (other than 4-Me-pentene-1) or a C3 to C8 vinylidene hydrocarbon, in the absence of ethylene or a liquid medium, at elevated temperature and a pressure of at least 5000 p.s.i., in the presence of an amount of free-radical initiator (other than a hydrazine, amine oxide or unsaturated, alpha-substituted diacyl peroxide), which is at least 0.10 mole per cent of the total monomer employed, e.g. 0.1 to 5.0 mole per cent. In the examples, propylene, butene, isobutylene and 3,3-dimethyl butene are polymerized using di-t-butyl peroxide as catalyst.ALSO:Waxy or oily polymerization products are obtained by polymerizing a C3 to C8 alphaolefin (other than 4-Me-pentene-1) or a C3 to C8 vinylidene hydrocarbon, in the absence of ethylene or a liquid medium, at elevated temperature and a pressure of at least 5000 p.s.i., in the presence of an amount of free-radical initiator (other than a hydrazine, amine oxide or unsaturated, alpha-substituted diacyl peroxide), which is at least 0.10 mole per cent of the total monomer employed, e.g. 0.1 to 5.0 mole per cent. In the examples, propylene, butene, isobutylene and 3,3-dimethyl butene are polymerized using di-t.-butyl peroxide as catalyst. The products find application as lubricants and plasticizers.
