Abstract
1,044,376. Space charge wave tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 21, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 45932/61. Heading H1D. An electron beam parametric amplifying or frequency converting device has input coupling means for coupling to the fast cyclotron wave of the electron beam, said means comprising a quadrupole which is so energized as to produce a circularly polarized wave of effectively infinite phase velocity. The beam produced by an electron gun 1 passes with substantially uniform axial velocity to an electron collector 2 through an input coupler in the form of a linear quadrupole comprising few planar symmetrically arranged deflecting plates supplied in opposite pairs 6, 7 and 8, 9 with phase quadrature signals which set up a circularly polarized wave of frequency fs, a pumping means 4 of similar construction to that used in an Adler tube fed with a frequency of 2 fs and an output coupler represented as deflecting plates 11, 12 connected to an output circuit tuned to frequency fs. If desired, the output coupler may be of the same form as the input coupler whose plate length may be between 5 and 40 times the input signal wavelength, e.g. 0.5 inch long spaced 0.05 inch apart.
