Abstract

In the manufacture of alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal phosphates by introducing an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal compound into P2O5-containing gases obtained by burning phosphorus, e.g. as described in Specifications 1,035,971 and 1,035,972, there is employed a 1 to 50 mol per cent excess of P2O5 over that required for a final product having a desired metal oxide to P2O5 molar ratio. The more acid the desired product, i.e. the lower the metal oxide: P2O5 ratio thereof, the greater is the required excess. For products of the same composition, the higher the reaction temperature the greater is the required excess. For example an excess of about 40 mol per cent is required to form products having a metal oxide: P2O5 ratio of 1.0, and about 2% for a ratio of 1.5. Preferred temperature ranges and corresponding required excesses of P2O5 for products having a desired range of compositions are tabulated. Higher temperatures are required the more alkaline the desired product. Other things being equal potassium compounds require higher temperatures than sodium compounds.
