Abstract

104,416. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). April 4, 1916. Tooled gearing.-In double reduction gearing comprising high and low speed toothed wheels 14, 23 and intermediate wheels 31, 32, the shafts of the wheels 14, 23 are journaled in bearings mounted in recesses at the junction of the two parts 6, 7 of a divided casing, and the shaft 33 of the wheels 31, 32 is journaled in bearings 34 in the lower part of the casing. Runway grooves in the walls of the casing connect the bearing- sockets of the shafts 24, 33, to enable the shaft 33 to be inserted from above. The bearings are closed on the outside by cover-plates 38, which fire annular for the bearings of the projecting shafts 17, 24. The wheels 14, 31 are duplicated, as shown in Fig. 3, and the intermediate wheels 23, 32 occupy the space between the duplicated parts. The gear-wheels are preferably of the helical and flexible type. Lubricating-oil is thrown up by the wheels 31 in the form of spray through a passage 43 to an upper reservoir 41, which supplies the bearings and gear teeth through passages 48, 52. The wheels 31 run, at the lower part, in groove 45, to which oil has access through openings 47. The cover 10 of the casing has inner and outer ribs 13, 12; the former condense the oil spray and separate air from the oil, and the latter increase the cooling effect. The oil drains down to a well 46.
