Abstract

A solution containing from 10 to 80% by weight of polyurethane in an inert organic solvent is prepared by (1) interacting in said solvent 1 mol of a hydroxyl terminated linear polyester or polyesteramide, between 1.2 and 2.5 moles of an organic diisocyanate and between 0.25 and 1 mole of water and, when the viscosity of the solution is between 1 and 1500 poises measured at 25 DEG C; (2) adding an isocyanate-reactive compound in a molar amount at least equal to the molar amount of isocyanate groups unreacted at the end of step (1). A catalyst e.g. a tertiary amine may be used in step (1) and may be deactivated by addition of an acidic compound either after step (1) or (2). The diisocyanate may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic. The isocyanate reactive compound may be monofunctional e.g. methanol, phenol or polyfunctional e.g. a glycol, triol or diamine. Suitable acidic compounds for deactivation of the catalyst are: adipic, salicylic, phosphoric and hydrochloric acids.ALSO:A solution containing from 10 to 80% by weight of polyurethane in an inert solvent prepared by (1) reacting in said solvent 1 mole of a linear polyester or polyesteramide with 1.2-2.5 moles of an organic diisocyanate and 0.25-1.0 moles of water and, when the viscosity of the solution is between 1 and 1500 poises measured at 25 DEG C. (2) adding an isocyanate-reactive compound in amount at least equal to the molar amount of unreacted -NCO groups at the end of step (1) is applied to a substrate e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a polyurethane, knitted woven or felted material, rubber, paper, wood, leather, metals, glass and foams of polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane. The mixture may then be cured at between room temperature and 180 DEG C. The solvent may be an ester, ketone, aromatic hydrocarbon or chlorohydrocarbon. In Example (3) a nylon textile fabric was coated and the product cured at room temperature for 3 days.
