Abstract

A cosmetic for inhibiting ageing and degradation tion of the skin comprises a carrier and one or more compounds of formula <FORM:1043984/A5-A6/1> wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted; Y is CN or <FORM:1043984/A5-A6/2> wherein X is -OR3 or <FORM:1043984/A5-A6/3> , R1, R2 and R3 being independently any radical as specified for R; and AR is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic nucleus having at least one pair of conjugated double bonds; said compound (1) being devoid of nitro groups and aromatic-nuclear-substituted amino groups. The compound may contain a water-solubilizing group and a carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group. Preferred compounds are ethyl-a -cyano-b , b -diphenyl-acrylate and isooctyl-a -cyano-b ,b -diphenylacrylate. The cosmetic may be a hand lotion, aerosol, sunburn lotion, face cream, face powder, shaving lotion or cream.
