Abstract

In the production of petroleum coke by subjecting a heavy petroleum residuum to delayed coking and removing the raw coke by jets of high pressure water, coke fines are first separated and then homogeneously redistributed with the coke particles to facilitate subsequent treatment, by treating the raw coke/water mixture in the following manner: the coarser particles of raw coke are removed from the coke/water mixture, preferably by dragging coarse particles up an inclined apron as the slurry descends, the slurry of coke fines is separated by decanting and filtration, the water so removed is re-circulated to provide the source of high pressure water for removing coke from the coker and the recovered coke fines are uniformly re-combined with the coarser coke particles. The coke may be prepared from a heavy petroleum residuum charged at 850 DEG to 950 DEG F. to coking drums operating at 20 to 80 p.s.i. The coke removed from the coker is subjected to the filtration procedure above described and the combined mixture of coarse and uniformly distributed fines may then be passed to a rotary calciner operating at 2500 DEG F. counter-current to hot gases.ALSO:A slurry of coke fines is gravitationally settled from the coke washed from a coking drum. The slurry is settled, the water decanted and the fines filtered.
