Abstract

The invention comprises unsaturated co-polymers of propylene oxide and 1,2-epoxy-cyclo-octene-(5). The co-polymerization is effected at temperatures in the range 20-120 DEG C. in the presence of known catalysts for propylene oxide copolymerization, e.g. those obtained by treating organometallic compounds, e.g. triethylaluminium, monochlorodiethyl aluminium and dichloroethylaluminium with a small amount of water or with a chelating agent and water. An active catalyst is obtained from 1 mol.AIEt3, 0.5 mol. water and 0.5 mol. acetylacetone. The copolymerization may be carried out continuously or batchwise and in the presence of an inert diluent. The co-polymers can be cross-linked with peroxides or with sulphur and accelerators according to known techniques. The vulcanization of a copolymer containing 95 mol. per cent propylene oxide and 5 mol. per cent 1,2-epoxy-cyclooctene-(5) using the tetramethylthiuram disulphide/2-mercaptobenzthiazole accelerator system is described. Examples describe the preparation of coplymers containing 592-5/32.3 g. and 237/12.9 g. of propylene oxide/1,2-epoxy-cyclo-octene-(5) using the catalyst specified above.
