Abstract
1,043,693. Treatment of sugar beet seedlings. J. G. POTTIER. May 25, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 20090/62. Heading A1E. A process for the modification of the biochemical characteristics of sugar beet seedlings comprises subjecting the seedlings to shock treatment at a temperature between -40‹C. and -197‹C. for a period of time less than 10 seconds. Seedlings freshly withdrawn from water are enclosed in a pinchbeck satchet lined with moist calico which satchet is then exposed to the required temperature, e.g. by immersion in crude liquid nitrogen, liquid propane or solid carbon dioxide, the satchet then being heated to ambient temperature e.g. by immersion in water. The treated seedlings are stated to produce beets of smaller height and therefore higher sugar concentration than untreated seedlings of the same strain and these dwarf beets also give dwarf beets in the second generation. A seedling is defined in the Specification as being a plantlet which has sufficiently out grown its parent seed to the extent of being capable of survival without being any longer dependent upon that seed.
