Abstract

A solid extract of embryonic tissue having therapeutic properties, e.g. for treatment of insomnia and rheumatism, is prepared by (a) extracting embryonic maxillae (teeth) tissue of mammals with water, (b) adjusting the pH of the extract to from 3 to 4, (c) adding an inorganic salt as a precipitating agent to precipitate impurities from the extract, (d) separating supernatant liquid from insolubles, (e) adjusting the pH of the separated liquid from 7.5 to 8.5, (f) again separating supernatant liquid from insolubles (g) adjusting the pH of the separated liquid to from 5 to 6, (h) adding an inorganic salt as a precipitating agent to precipitate the desired substance, and (i) separating the precipitated substance from the liquid. The product may then be dissolved in water, purified by dialysis and finally lyophilised. The inorganic salt may be (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4 or NaCl. A pharmaceutical composition comprises a solid extract as above and a carrier for oral, rectal or parenteral use and may be in the form of a tablet, pill or powder. It may be used topically in a shampoo or may be incorporated in a dentifrice.
